Amazon Adds Scam Detection to Alexa for Shopping

Amazon is adding an AI-powered scam-detection feature to Alexa for Shopping, allowing customers to check whether suspicious emails, texts and other messages came from the retailer.

Amazon said about 360,000 customers contact its customer service department each year to ask whether a message from Amazon is genuine. The company said Alexa for Shopping can “definitively” confirm whether a communication originated from Amazon’s systems by comparing it with billions of messages sent globally.

The system analyzes sender information, content, timing, message metadata and other data to determine whether a message is authentic. Amazon said the feature will improve as customers report more suspicious messages.

The capability addresses scams involving fake order confirmations, Prime membership renewal alerts, account suspension warnings, package delivery notifications and job offers. Earlier this year, Amazon introduced [email protected], where people can forward suspicious messages and receive confirmation about whether an email is genuine or a scam. Amazon also provides the same assistance through an online customer-service form.

Alexa for Shopping is available on the Amazon website and mobile app. The assistant can also find personalized deals, create shopping guides, help customers reorder everyday items, provide AI product overviews and transcribe handwritten shopping lists.
