AI data center boom wins support from US truckers despite broader opposition

AI data center developers are hiring American truckers to transport goods and construction materials to rural projects, creating a boom in trucking demand across the US.

The work has improved truckers’ views of AI data centers compared with many other Americans. A shortage of truckers is also boosting pay and giving some trucking companies more stability. However, fuel and maintenance costs are rising as fleets become more active. Diesel has reached an all-time high of $5.85 a gallon, making fleets increasingly expensive to operate while trucking demand has fallen substantially.

Many rural data centers are built where land is cheaper, but local infrastructure often cannot support the traffic involved. Trucking fleets are therefore also being hired to help upgrade roads and other infrastructure.

The boom may not last. Several states are imposing construction moratoriums amid widespread opposition to AI data centers. Once a facility is complete, it needs only a small workforce, and freight demand can drop sharply.

AI data centers are a major issue in the US midterm elections. Opposition candidates are gaining support, while major AI companies are directing superPAC money toward candidates who favor new construction. The trucking boom shows how tangible benefits to jobs and livelihoods can improve views of AI companies.
