Marcin Blacha, CD Projekt Red’s vice president of narration and story director, says a successful remake of The Witcher must preserve what worked in the original while reaching players who did not experience it.
Speaking at a panel during Logitech Play 2026, Blacha said the challenge is to identify what made the 2007 game compelling and retell it for a new audience. He was a lead writer on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Blacha also discussed “Act Four” of The Witcher, set in a rural lakeside region. He described it as folkloric and full of beautiful landscapes, while noting that recreating its atmosphere can be difficult because players experience it differently and the feeling can be vague.
“To create a good remake, you need to identify what was good and find a way to recreate it using newer technology, [while] staying true to the spirit of the original game,” Blacha said.
The remake is in development at Fool’s Theory and will use Unreal Engine 5. CD Projekt Red is also working on The Witcher 4, the first game in a planned new trilogy that the company wants to release within six years. The company has also launched The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, which brings a collection of improvements to the role-playing game.
