Gartner says the future of work is moving beyond simple AI automation. The analysts argue that companies should use AI to enhance human capability and redesign how work gets done, while preserving human judgment and context.
The report warns that AI-induced layoffs could create higher costs later. By as soon as 2029, one in three (30%) employees whose jobs were replaced by AI will need to be rehired, potentially at a higher cost than if they had been retained.
Gartner identifies four trends for business leaders:
- Human-AI collaboration: Companies should treat AI and automation mainly as augmentation, not replacement.
- Workforce adaptation: Employees will need continuous learning, changing roles and new ways to work alongside AI.
- Human context: Organizations should protect judgment, meaning and institutional knowledge.
- Continuous investment: AI spending should operate as an ongoing cycle of reinvestment rather than a single action.
Gartner warns that using AI mainly to reduce headcount could weaken talent pipelines, reduce innovation and create expensive recruitment challenges. VP Analyst Tori Paulman said the advantage will go to executives who build organizations where AI reshapes roles and workflows across traditional boundaries.
