Amazon blocks Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping

Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping on behalf of users, according to GeekWire. Muse users began seeing a message on Sunday saying that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use.

GeekWire reported that Meta did not notify Amazon that Muse would access its store. Amazon also raised privacy and security concerns, saying Muse does not identify itself while browsing and appears to capture customer credentials. An unnamed Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that third-party applications making purchases for customers should operate openly and respect service providers’ decisions about participation.

Meta said when it launched Muse earlier this month that the agent cannot see secure login details or card payment information. During testing, The Verge used Muse to successfully buy tank tops from Amazon while other products remained in the basket. Reports have since raised concerns that Muse can see user messages without the required access permission enabled.

Amazon’s action follows its broader effort to keep customers shopping directly on its platform. The company sued Perplexity in November last year over the Comet shopping experience, and a judge sided with Perplexity in August. Since July, Amazon confirmation emails have also omitted some item names and product images, limiting information that external AI services could mine.
