YourOwnWeigh syncs Withings scale data to other apps without a subscription

Tom Anthony has created YourOwnWeigh, an open source project that lets Withings scale owners send their data to other apps without a subscription. The project was prompted by Withings’ plan to require new users to subscribe to Withings Plus to sync health data from the company’s devices to third-party apps.

YourOwnWeigh reroutes data away from Withings’ servers. Its web app runs on a server chosen by the user; Anthony says it can also run on a free Cloudflare account because it transfers little data. The app uses Bluetooth to install alternate firmware on Withings scales, which then upload data to a non-Withings server configured by the user. Rather than hosting a copy of Withings’ firmware, the app downloads and patches it as needed. It also imports the scale’s settings and existing user profiles, and downloads data from weigh-ins.

Anthony uses Apple Shortcuts to schedule transfers from the alternate server into Apple Health. The project is currently limited to two older Withings scale models. Anthony hopes the community will expand compatibility to other apps, including Google Health. The article says support for newer scales may be possible if their firmware can be patched in a similar way.
