Xbox previews two new ways to control cloud games

Microsoft is previewing two ways to control Xbox Cloud Gaming on smart TVs: by connecting an Xbox Nano controller directly to cloud servers over Wi-Fi, or by using a phone as a controller.

With cloud connect, the Xbox Nano uses Wi-Fi to connect to the cloud server running a game instead of connecting to the TV over Bluetooth. The Xbox team says this could reduce input latency and make gameplay feel more responsive.

Players in the US can start previewing cloud connect for the Xbox Nano today. People outside the US can preview the phone controller option on smart TVs. The controller feature is available through the Xbox Cloud Gaming website, so players can use the streaming service without a dedicated Bluetooth controller.

To set up cloud connect on the Nano, players need the Xbox beta app for Android or the Xbox Accessories app on PC. On smart TVs, the phone controller option requires turning on preview features in the Settings > Account section of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Microsoft says both experiences are still being tested and that availability, supported games, and supported devices may be limited during the beta. The Verge’s Tom Warren reported the Nano’s Wi-Fi cloud connection the day before Microsoft announced it.
