Microsoft is preparing Windows 11 to support Advanced Performance Extensions (APX), an x86-64 instruction set extension that could improve performance and efficiency on upcoming processors.
According to Wccftech, Windows enthusiast Xeno spotted a new APX toggle in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 29695.1001, distributed through the Experimental (Future Platforms) channel. The toggle’s description says, “Let Windows use APX for better performance.” Enabling it requires a system restart.
APX doubles the number of general-purpose registers and is designed to reduce memory operations. The source reports that the extension targets future Intel CPUs, including Nova Lake, as well as future AMD processors. The potential performance gains remain unconfirmed; the toggle’s appearance indicates Windows support is being prepared, not that APX-enabled processors or measured improvements are already available.
