OpenAI plans to test visual advertisements during image generation in ChatGPT, starting later this month in the United States with an initial group of advertisers.
The company says ads may use images to show product inspiration, how a product is used, or experiences linked to a service. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the image being created. It also reiterated that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. The company is also adding tools to help advertisers measure whether ads lead to purchases or other conversions. It is integrating conversion data with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp. Its attribution partners include AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, and others.
For brand suitability, OpenAI is working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The company says safeguards are designed to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable conversations. It also says the independent partners will not have access to private user conversations while assessing those safeguards.
The visual ad test is currently limited to the United States. OpenAI did not specify when it might expand the format to other markets.
