Keurig’s Alta single-serve machine uses compressed coffee pucks called AltaRounds instead of pods made from plastic and aluminum. Keurig first showed the machine two years ago.
Each puck wraps pressed coffee grounds in a plant-based coating derived from seaweed. The pucks are 100 percent compostable, though their current plastic wrappers help keep them fresh. Keurig is working to switch to paper wrappers, according to CNET.
The Alta is available for preorder for $499.99, with shipping expected to start on October 21. It is currently sold only in a bundle with glassware and six boxes of AltaRounds. At launch, six caffeinated varieties will be available, including light roast, medium roast, and flavored options. Color choices are graphite, sandstone, and sandstone with a “satin stainless” gray finish.
Alongside traditional brewing, the machine can make espresso. It pushes hot water through a punctured AltaRound at high pressure and has a built-in milk frother. Each puck has a QR code that gives the machine brewing instructions, including pressure and temperature. Users can select drink recipes on the touchscreen, and the Wi-Fi-connected machine can receive updates with more recipes and options as additional AltaRounds varieties are released.
