Atari will close the Atari VCS software store on February 1, 2027, retiring the platform, according to an announcement posted to the Atari Club Discord and shared by Tom’s Hardware.
Owners can download and add software to their libraries through Atari’s official online store until January 31, 2027. Apps and games downloaded before the closure will remain usable afterward.
Atari says it plans to release an operating system update after the store closes. The update is intended to let owners move all functionality to their local machine, removing dependencies on Atari infrastructure for authentication and software.
The company also plans to release an Atari Home Brew app. Atari says it will let owners continue adding games shared with the community by third-party developers who still want to develop for and support the VCS.
The Linux-based, AMD-powered mini PC was loosely inspired by the original Atari 2600, but did not include a cartridge slot. Its online store expanded its functions with access to streaming services, including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.
The announcement follows a decade-long saga of delays and name changes. Atari had also assured crowdfunding backers that the retro console was not doomed.
