Cyberattack Disrupts Refrigeration at French Supermarkets

A cyberattack disrupted refrigeration systems at multiple French supermarket chains overnight, according to BleepingComputer. Attackers reportedly accessed Danfoss refrigeration controllers and triggered their automatic defrosting systems, raising refrigerator temperatures.

French outlets reported that between 250 and 350 stores were affected. The named chains include Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour Market, Monoprix, Leclerc, and Super U. The incident caused food waste and financial losses, according to those reports.

Coopérative U president Dominique Schelcher confirmed that several stores in the chain were affected. He said teams were working with refrigeration specialists and that an investigation would examine the attack. Schelcher called the targeting of equipment used to preserve fresh food “extremely serious” and “unprecedented.”

The Paris prosecutor’s office told AFP it had opened an investigation to identify victims and establish links between the attack, reported food losses, and fires. The attackers’ method of gaining access to the controllers has not been established.

There is no evidence linking the incident to a vulnerability that the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned about in May 2025: CVE-2025-41450, an authentication bypass affecting the Danfoss AK-SM 8xxA Series hardware platform. Separately, Ahold Delhaize said Monday that it took some systems offline following a “cybersecurity incident.”
