Emerald AI, Google and Nvidia have formed the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to develop a framework for data centers that can adjust electricity use according to grid conditions.
The alliance says future AI data centers could shift computing workloads, use on-site batteries or paired generation, and export stored energy to the grid during periods of stress. High-compute tasks such as training could also be moved to off-peak periods.
Nvidia Head of Sustainability Josh Parker said the campuses could respond to system contingencies by changing how much electricity they draw at a given time. AEMA is expected to define technical specifications, performance metrics and open standards for deploying the approach at scale.
Emerald AI, Google and Nvidia are the alliance’s launch members. SiliconANGLE reports that Anthropic is expected to join. Nvidia and Emerald AI have already developed software for managing power consumption in relation to the grid.
Google said earlier this year that it had more than 1GW of demand-response capacity. The initiative comes as energy demand from data centers rises. Bloomberg data suggests US data centers could use as much natural gas as Germany and Japan combined by 2035. A Moody’s study projects that total US data center energy consumption could exceed 426 TWh by 2030.
