Nvidia Brings DLSS 5 to RTX 40 GPUs but Limits Gamer Controls

Nvidia will officially expand DLSS 5 support beyond its latest graphics cards. The AI rendering technology will launch first on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, while official support for older GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs is planned after Nvidia further tunes RTX 50 Series performance.

Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj said model updates are expected later this fall. The company has not committed to official support for RTX 30 or RTX 20 Series GPUs, which modders have already targeted with a leaked version of DLSS 5, although those unofficial implementations reportedly had very low frame rates and frequent crashes.

For gamers, DLSS 5 will offer a simple on-or-off toggle. Developers will receive more detailed artistic controls, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and custom per-pixel masking. Developers may expose some of those controls through their own game menus.

DLSS 5 can automatically recognize and isolate objects such as faces, textiles and foliage. Engine-level masking can also let artists target specific assets. Unreal Engine 5 has a native plugin, and Nvidia provides SDKs. Developers can apply DLSS 5 across a game or customize it for different scenes, cutscenes or gameplay sections. Nvidia says its models run on every frame, with no minimum framerate requirement.

Nvidia said more games are on the way but did not reconfirm the previously announced titles.
