GM is not bringing Apple CarPlay back because it never left its gas-powered vehicles

GM’s latest software announcement has caused confusion about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the phone-mirroring systems never left its gasoline-powered vehicles.

Last week, GM announced a new software experience for the upcoming Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, including updated picture-in-picture designs for CarPlay and Android Auto. The announcement was interpreted by some outlets as a reversal of GM’s decision to remove the systems.

GM has not offered phone projection in any of its electric vehicles for the past three years. That includes the Chevy Equinox, Blazer, Bolt, and Silverado EV; Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ; and GMC Sierra and Hummer EV models. These vehicles use embedded Google products such as Maps and Gemini through software based on Android Automotive.

GM’s gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs have continued to support phone projection. The company said in October 2025 that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would remain available in those vehicles “for the foreseeable future.”

Colin McCormick, GM’s group product manager for Google built-in, projection, and profiles, said the new interface is intended to let customers use phone projection and the native system together. The Verge reports that GM appears to be seeking coexistence with CarPlay and Android Auto after its earlier policy created uncertainty among vehicle owners.
