Microsoft will retire its Microsoft 365 Companion apps—Calendar, People, and Files—on December 16, 2026. The company said the apps will no longer function or be supported after that date and advised administrators to remove them from devices in their tenant.
The announcement follows Microsoft's October 2025 plan to automatically install the apps on compatible Windows 11 enterprise devices with Microsoft 365 desktop apps by the end of December 2025. The apps integrate Copilot and provide access to organizational contacts, Microsoft 365 and locally stored files, and the Microsoft 365 calendar from the Windows 11 taskbar.
Microsoft said the apps launch automatically at startup by default. Administrators could opt out of automatic installation through Device Configuration settings in the Apps Admin Center, while users could disable automatic launch in each app's settings.
Microsoft has now stopped installing the Companion apps through Microsoft 365 Apps updates. The company asked administrators and users of unmanaged devices to uninstall them before December 16, 2026.
In a separate reminder, Microsoft said administrators should migrate Entra ID users to phishing-resistant methods such as passkeys, QR code authentication, or FIDO2 security keys before it retires SMS first-factor sign-in in February 2027.
