A new report says Xiaomi’s custom XRING 03 system-on-chip has full support for the BCn texture format, a feature that could help it run Windows games through emulation.
The change concerns the chip’s Mali GPU. According to the report, this capability is not normally available in other implementations of ARM’s Mali graphics architecture. Xiaomi has therefore added a feature that could improve compatibility as Windows game emulation becomes more popular.
Modern smartphone system-on-chips are already capable enough to run some current AAA games, making emulation a possible next step for mobile hardware. Support for BCn textures could remove one compatibility limitation for the XRING 03 when it attempts to handle Windows game assets.
The report does not describe the XRING 03 as a finished Windows gaming platform, nor does it provide a complete list of compatible games. Its finding is narrower: the chip reportedly supports the BCn texture format in full, giving its Mali GPU a capability that is uncommon among ARM-based implementations.
That addition may make the XRING 03 more relevant to Windows game emulation, but actual results will depend on the emulator, the individual game, and the rest of the device software.
