Some Windows 11 users who installed the Bing Wallpaper app are seeing a full-page promotional image for a collection of 11 Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies become their desktop background.
The promotion does not appear to affect every user and seems to be part of a regional rollout. However, numerous negative reactions on Reddit indicate that it has reached many PCs. Bing Wallpaper is an optional app that provides daily wallpapers; it is not installed by default on Windows 11.
Several Reddit users said they immediately uninstalled the app after seeing the promotion. One described Bing Wallpaper as previously harmless because it offered rotating images of animals, environments, and patterns, while another argued that users become the product when software is free from a trillion-dollar company.
Windows Latest reported that Bing Wallpaper’s terms allow Microsoft to provide promotional offers. Critics said the full-page desktop advertisement goes beyond what users would reasonably expect from a wallpaper app.
The incident follows an earlier problem, about a year ago, in which accidentally clicking a Windows 11 background opened a Bing search. The latest promotion has renewed criticism of advertising in Windows 11 and of coordination between Microsoft teams.
