TP-Link launched its first Wi-Fi 8 routers at IFA 2026, with the Archer 8 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra scheduled to reach stores later in 2026. Pre-orders will begin in some regions at the start of October.
Wi-Fi 8 does not increase raw speed over Wi-Fi 7. Instead, it aims to improve connection stability, reliability, interference handling, and performance at the edge of a wireless network. It is also designed to manage more devices competing for bandwidth, which could help in crowded homes, apartments, and offices.
TP-Link says the routers use Dynamic Sub-band Operation (DSO) and Non-Primary Channel Access (NPCA) to allocate only the bandwidth each device needs. This can leave more capacity for other devices and reduce congestion.
However, the first Wi-Fi 8 routers use a draft version of the standard. Wi-Fi 8 is likely to be finalized in mid-2027, and compatible smartphones and laptops are not expected until 2027. Those devices will initially be available in small numbers and positioned as premium products.
The Archer 8 Ultra is backwards compatible with earlier Wi-Fi standards, but its full benefits require compatible client devices. Until Wi-Fi 8 hardware becomes more widely available, launch prices and limited device support make waiting a more practical choice for most Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 owners.
