Tesla’s Cybercab bars children under 13 and details crash procedures

Tesla’s Cybercab will not allow children under 13 to ride “at this time,” even when accompanied by a parent. Children aged 8 to 17 may ride in Tesla’s Robotaxi Model Y SUVs, but all passengers under 18 must have an adult with them.

The Cybercab does not include standard LATCH anchors for child seats. Tesla says child seats can instead be attached with the vehicle’s seat belt. The company’s documentation also describes what happens after a crash: airbags inflate, doors unlock, hazard warning and interior lights turn on, the high-voltage battery is disabled, windows move to the “vent” position, and the vehicle brakes to a stop and parks. Its infotainment system then starts a two-way connection with Tesla’s rider support team.

The vehicle uses electronic door latches that can open automatically at the start or end of a ride. A manual release is placed on the armrest of each door. Tesla is also using brake-by-wire, with electronic actuators controlling the brake calipers instead of a hydraulic system. The Cybercab’s windows cannot be fully opened “at this time,” according to the documentation. Its USB-C outlets reportedly provide 90W of power, according to influencer Jeremy Judkins.

Tesla must also demonstrate that the vehicles are safe to the public, local governments, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has opened an investigation into the Cybercab rollout.
