Sony unveils FE 8-14mm F3.5 G fisheye lens with 180-degree view

Sony has unveiled the FE 8-14mm F3.5 G, its first fisheye lens and the widest-angle lens in the company's lens range. Designed for full-frame cameras, it offers a maximum f/3.5 aperture throughout its 8-14mm zoom range.

The compact lens is dust- and moisture-resistant and includes a zoom lock, a clicked or de-clicked aperture ring, a focus switch, and a rear filter holder. Its bulbous front element means it cannot accept threaded filters. Zooming and focusing are internal, so the lens barrel does not extend during use.

Close focusing is possible at 0.15m, with a maximum magnification of 0.22x. At the widest 8mm focal length, the lens provides a 180-degree field of view. Sony's built-in lens hood appears in the frame at that setting, and captured files require processing to remove pronounced vignetting. At 14mm, the hood is completely outside the shot.

The lens is aimed at uses including astrophotography, urban landscapes, skateboarding, and hiphop music videos. It belongs to Sony's G range of enthusiast-level lenses and is priced at €1,700 in Europe. Pricing and availability for the UK, US, and Australia are still to be confirmed.
