Sony reported net profit of 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion) for the three months ended September, up 44% from 311.4 billion yen (about $1.96 billion) in the same period a year earlier, according to the company’s September earnings.
The company attributed the increase largely to its PlayStation business and the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film, released in July, earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, which the source describes as the third-highest total in history.
Sony Pictures Entertainment posted earnings of $581 million for the quarter, a 527% increase from $93 million in the same period in 2025.
PlayStation 5 console sales fell to 2.6 million units from 4 million in Q2 2025. Sony-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine sold 2.4 million units against a reported budget of $300 million. PlayStation game sales increased across digital downloads and physical discs, despite a week-long player blackout in August protesting Sony’s plan to ditch discs entirely.
Sony CFO Lin Tao said development of the next-generation PlayStation console was making “solid progress” and was “progressing as scheduled.”
