Sony denies ending disc production, confirms 10% output cut

Sony has denied reports that it plans to abandon physical disc manufacturing entirely. The company confirmed that its sole remaining disc-making plant will reduce output by 10%, rather than by the previously reported 90%.

Sony DADC clarified the figure after earlier remarks caused confusion. A spokesperson said the statement referred to an overall product-volume decline by 10 percent, not a decline to 10 percent.

Sony has maintained that production of new physical games will still end in January 2028. However, Sony confirmed that publishers may continue reordering existing disc-based games after new physical production formally stops.

PlayStation disc games already on store shelves will remain available to buy for the foreseeable future. The arrangement indicates that the shift away from physical media will be gradual for publishers, although the future of Sony’s disc operations remains unclear.

Reports earlier this year suggested that employees at the Thalgau facility were being moved from disc production to microlens production, but Sony DADC did not respond to a separate request to verify whether all 300 employees face retraining.

The clarification corrects the reported production figure, but it does not establish how long the Thalgau plant will continue making discs beyond 2028.
