Sony has reduced the number of major Android updates promised for the Xperia 10 VI from three to two, citing the phone’s storage configuration.
In a support post spotted by Phandroid, Sony said the Xperia 10 VI “does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate” because of storage-related limitations. The company had originally promised three Android version updates for the phone.
The Xperia 10 VI is still set to receive four years of security updates. Sony said the issue will not affect other models.
The change shows that long-term software support promises can be revised. The source notes that some high-end Android phones are promised up to seven years of updates, and raises the possibility that future versions may not work well on devices launched years earlier. It gives Android 24 as a hypothetical example, not a confirmed compatibility issue.
The source is James Rogerson of TechRadar. It reports Sony’s explanation and update commitment; it does not establish that other manufacturers will change their promises.
