Sony says Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaler, is now available on PlayStation 5. The company says the feature is designed to improve performance on the base console.
Two recent first-party games, Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, have already received patches to use QSSR, according to the source report.
QSSR is a performance-focused version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is available only on PS5 Pro. Sony says QSSR was developed through Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. It uses a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5.
The announcement brings Sony’s AI upscaling technology to the base PS5, while PSSR remains exclusive to the Pro model. The source report identifies Mike Fitzgerald as Sony’s Head of Technology, but its excerpt ends before giving any further comment from him.
