TechRadar reviewer John Archer praises the Sony Bravia Theater Trio for its powerful, balanced sound and ability to adapt to different room layouts. The three-speaker system has separate center, left and right speakers, with wireless left and right units that can be placed apart to create a wider soundstage.
Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping system can add up to 24 virtual channels to the physical speakers. It uses a supplied microphone dongle connected to a phone to tailor the sound to the room. Archer says the system produced a coherent, balanced soundstage even when he placed the speakers in awkward positions. Optional Sony Rear 9 speakers add surround sound.
The system’s HDMI loop-through supports 4K/120Hz gaming feeds, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, as well as eARC for audio from a TV. It does not support HDR10+. Other connections include USB for software updates, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 6.0. The system supports Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and includes Sony’s DSEE Ultimate audio upscaling system.
TechRadar lists the price as $1,999, £1,999 and AU$2,999. Archer says the Trio’s sound is a strong point, while noting that optional rear speakers are needed for a proper surround effect and that the listening sweet spot is limited.
