Rivian spinoff Mind Robotics hires Doug Field as president

Mind Robotics, a startup founded by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in 2025, has appointed Doug Field as its president. The company says Field will oversee its effort to build “universally capable robots” for use in Rivian factories and other applications.

Field most recently led Ford’s electric vehicle and software division, a role he held until earlier this year. Before joining Ford in 2021, he worked at Apple, where he was a vice president of special projects and the de facto head of Project Titan, the company’s effort to develop an autonomous electric car. He previously led Mac hardware engineering at Apple, then left in 2013 to become Tesla’s chief vehicle engineer, helping oversee the Model 3. He left Tesla in 2018 and returned to Apple.

Mind Robotics says its robots are being designed with the dexterity and physical reasoning needed for industrial work. The startup has raised more than $1 billion in financing but has not shown robots publicly. It currently lists 32 open positions.

Rivian will be the first customer for the robots, which will initially be tested in its factories. Mind Robotics is also using AI training data from Rivian, which owns equity in the startup. Scaringe has said he wants the companies to remain separate. The company has not confirmed whether it is developing humanoid robots.
