Restate raises $20M as AI agents drive demand for durable infrastructure

Berlin-based Restate has raised $20 million in a Series A round led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The startup builds infrastructure designed to keep multi-step software workflows running through crashes and network interruptions.

Co-founder Stephen Ewan told TechCrunch that Restate was founded in 2022 to build a durable workflow engine, before the rise of AI agents made the technology more relevant. Agent workflows can run longer and take less predictable paths than traditional software, making it important to track each step so processes can be reproduced and produce consistent outcomes, he said.

Ewan said Restate has signed multiple customer contracts worth six and seven figures over the past few months. The company counts coding platform Replit and Fortune 500 companies, including customers in finance, among its users. It aims to compete with Temporal, which announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month.

Restate built its own storage, replication and redundancy layers instead of relying on an external database. Ewan said this makes the system fast and lightweight. The company plans to use the new funding to hire go-to-market staff and engineers and expand its San Francisco Bay Area office. Ewan said Restate could eventually serve companies beyond the technology sector.
