Proton VPN registrations from Vietnam reached 450% above the usual baseline on September 1, according to data from the Proton VPN Observatory shared by David Peterson, General Manager at Proton VPN.
The increase followed the introduction of a restrictive cybersecurity law that tightens online speech controls and expands data-logging obligations for internet service providers (ISPs) and technology companies. The latest rise also follows a 170% increase after fake-news fines were introduced in July, as well as another increase in August.
Peterson said it was difficult to isolate a single cause. He pointed to a combination of social-media penalties, crypto crackdowns and ISP logging requirements. He also said some Vietnamese news outlets and their social-media accounts, which have faced censorship, recommended VPNs to readers.
Proton VPN is based in Switzerland and operates a server network spanning 145 countries. Its free plan has limitations, while a premium subscription costs the equivalent of $2.99 per month. The source notes that a VPN can encrypt traffic and mask an IP address, but does not remove legal identification requirements for local social-media accounts or trading platforms.
