OpenAI brings ChatGPT into Chrome with a new sidebar

OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome, adding a sidebar that can work alongside open webpages and use information from multiple tabs. The company says ChatGPT can also organize and group tabs.

In Chat, the assistant can look across open tabs to gather information for its answers. ChatGPT Work can interact with websites, including sending messages, filling out forms and downloading files. These actions depend on account access and the permissions granted.

TechRadar’s Eric Hal Schwartz tried the feature by asking ChatGPT Work to fill out a free technology webinar registration form, with instructions to stop before submitting it. The assistant paused to ask for clarification when it lacked information to select an industry category. Schwartz said reviewing the completed form remained essential.

The Chrome integration lets users ask ChatGPT about webpages without copying text into a separate conversation. The article describes research across several open pages as one possible use, while noting that the assistant may misread details, particularly on sites with unusual formatting or interactive elements.

The update places ChatGPT more directly within Chrome as Google works to make Gemini more prominent in the browser. OpenAI’s extension requires installation from the Chrome Web Store and account sign-in. Access to information across tabs requires permissions, and website interactions through ChatGPT Work depend on account access.
