North Wales AI data center plan draws opposition from more than 24,000 petition signers

Plans for an AI data center on the site of a former factory near the Menai Strait in North Wales have drawn public opposition. An online petition opposing the development has been signed by more than 24,000 people, and around 300 people attended a demonstration in Caernarfon.

Developer Canolfan Ddata Mena submitted plans in late 2025 to redevelop the former Ferodo factory site at Griffith's Crossing, near Caernarfon. The 40-hectare site has been unused since the factory closed permanently in 2008. The proposed complex would cover an area equivalent to 57 football pitches, and the plans say all existing buildings and structures would be demolished.

The project would require a 450MW power connection, partly powered by local renewable sources. Developers say it would create 200 permanent jobs and hundreds of temporary construction jobs. They also cite ecological enhancement measures and collaboration with local education providers to increase training opportunities.

Opponents say the proposal offers no clear, sustainable benefit for local residents. Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts called for close scrutiny and public engagement. The former factory made asbestos-based brake linings, and some buildings contained asbestos insulation. Developers say work would comply with Hazardous Waste Regulations and contaminated materials would go to a licensed landfill in northern England.
