Netflix has released a first-look trailer for its adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, with the seven-episode series scheduled to arrive on October 1.
Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, who marries Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott. Cathy presents a charming exterior while manipulating others and destroying lives for fun and profit. The trailer follows her entry into the Trask family.
Steinbeck’s novel follows the intertwined histories of the Hamilton and Trask families, from the American Civil War to the end of World War I. The series will explore major events from the book, including Cathy abandoning her sons, Cal and Aron. Cal sees himself as “evil” like his mother, while Aron creates an idealized version of her.
The cast also includes Joseph Zada and Joe Anders as the Trask twins, and Ciaran Hinds as Samuel, the head of the Hamilton family. Zoe Kazan created the series. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean.
