ModRetro Chromatic Transparent handheld starts at $149.99

TechRadar reviewer James Pickard spent two weeks using the ModRetro Chromatic Transparent, an updated handheld designed as a modern take on the original Game Boy. It plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, as well as ModRetro’s own re-releases.

The transparent model is available in several colorways and starts at $149.99 / £139.99, which is $50 / £45 less than the original version. A copy of Tetris is included with every purchase. Pickard said he used the handheld to play Tetris and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX.

The device has a see-through plastic shell and weighs 6.2 oz (176g), making it slightly lighter than the original Game Boy, according to the review. Its screen keeps the original Game Boy’s dimensions and resolution but uses an IPS backlit LCD protected by scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass.

Pickard described the screen as clear in different lighting conditions and the handheld as a successful modern refinement of the classic device. The ModRetro Chromatic Transparent is available to buy now for $149.99 / £139.99.
