Microsoft: Windows KB5124010 Update Crashes Some Games and Apps

Microsoft says some games and applications that use AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding may crash after installing the September 2026 KB5124010 preview update for Windows 11.

KB5124010 is optional and requires users to select “Download and install.” It installs automatically on Windows 11 24H2 devices when “Get the latest updates as soon as they're available” is turned on. Microsoft says affected apps may fail to launch, close without warning, or work until a feature such as music playback is used. They may include games, media players, and some productivity apps.

Microsoft says many modern apps do not use Windows for this audio decoding and are unaffected. The component behind the crashes is most commonly used by older applications that rely on Windows’ built-in decoder. Modern apps that use the AC-3 codec often include their own decoding components.

The company has not given a timeline for a fix. It says it is working to resolve the issue and will share more information in a future update.
