Microsoft has fixed a known issue that reset mouse personalization settings on some Windows 11 systems after users installed the optional KB5120998 preview update.
The problem affected non-English Windows installations. Cursor and cursor-animation settings selected in Mouse Properties failed to load, causing Windows to use standard defaults instead. Users reported that manually restoring the settings did not work, even after uninstalling KB5120998.
KB5120998 was released on August 27, 2026, with Start menu, taskbar, and Windows Search improvements for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The update normally required users to select “Download and install,” but it could install automatically when “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” was enabled.
Microsoft said the mouse-settings issue was resolved by the September 8, 2026 cumulative update, KB5124008, and later updates. The company described the cause as code components in affected locales that prevented the settings from loading.
Microsoft also said on Tuesday that it had resolved a separate issue that reset custom desktop settings on some Windows devices after KB5120998.
