Microsoft has released a fix for a known Excel problem caused by the September 2026 KB5002914 security update. The issue made copy-and-paste, autofill, and formula dragging fail silently for some users.
Microsoft said the bug affects Excel Online and Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. However, update KB5002655 currently fixes the problem only in the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It does not apply to Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, including Microsoft Office 365 Home.
Microsoft told BleepingComputer that some user scenarios involving conditional formatting may still be affected. The company said KB5002655 addresses certain paste operations that fail without an error message.
Until a permanent fix is available for all affected versions, Microsoft has documented a workaround using the “Paste Special” option. Users can open the “Home” tab, choose “Paste,” and use the Ctrl+Alt+V shortcut to select Formula, Formula and number formats, Values, Values and number formats, or Paste Link.
Some affected users have also reported that removing KB5002914 restores copy-and-paste functionality. Microsoft noted that uninstalling the security update also removes patches for remote code execution and information disclosure vulnerabilities.
