Microsoft fixes crashes tied to Windows 11 update KB5124010

Microsoft has fixed a bug that caused some games and apps to crash after installing the September 2026 Windows 11 preview update, KB5124010. The issue affected applications that use AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding.

Microsoft said affected applications could fail to launch or close without warning. Others might work normally until users tried certain features, such as playing music. The company said affected software could include games, media players, and some productivity apps.

KB5124010 is an optional update. It installs automatically on devices where the setting to get the latest updates as soon as they are available is enabled. Microsoft noted that many modern apps are unaffected because they do not use Windows' built-in decoder for this audio format, while some apps using the legacy AC-3 codec include their own decoding components.

Microsoft said its October 2026 Patch Tuesday update, KB5127648, addresses the issue. It recommended installing the latest security update on affected systems running Windows 11 24H2 and later.
