Meta Tests Video-First Feeds on Facebook and Instagram

Meta is testing layouts that put video first on Facebook and Instagram, extending a shift toward short-form video across social media. The tests are not confirmed permanent features.

TechCrunch reports that some users in India open Facebook directly to an immersive, full-screen video feed. Meta has said the experience would reach “video-heavy countries” first, with a possible US expansion in 2027.

On Instagram, app researcher Radu Oncescu noticed an option to make Reels the first thing users see when opening the app. Instagram Stories remain at the top, and swiping brings up the traditional feed of posts from followed accounts. Reels play with sound on by default. Meta spokesperson Devi Narasimhan told The Verge that the test is live in a handful of countries, without naming them. Narasimhan said users can switch back to the original layout and Reels become unmuted after a user swipes or clicks into a video.

Meta’s recent earnings call highlighted video viewing time on Facebook, which rose 9 percent globally and 10 percent in the US and Canada, along with changes to Reels ranking. Morning Consult polling found that 81 percent of US respondents said they watch Instagram Reels, while 39 percent said they post one.

The report notes that tests may not become permanent. It remains unclear whether users prefer video or engage with it because platforms place it prominently in their feeds.
