Meta reportedly plans camera-free Luna smart glasses

Meta may be ready to reveal a new pair of smart glasses with no camera, according to a report from The Information cited by The Verge. The glasses, codenamed Luna, could be revealed as soon as the Meta Connect event next week.

Instead of a camera, Luna will reportedly include six microphones for chatting with Meta AI and the new Muse AI agent. Speakers will provide audio playback. Removing the camera has apparently allowed Meta to make the glasses’ arms smaller and closer to the shape of ordinary frames.

Meta is reportedly targeting an October shipment in two styles: Clubmaster and Burbank.

The plan comes amid a privacy backlash over Meta’s existing smart glasses. People have used those glasses to record others secretly, and the products have been banned in places including New York courtrooms and Britain’s largest pub chain. Although the glasses have a recording LED, some users have developed workarounds that allow recording with the LED off.

The Information also reports that Meta will show new augmented reality glasses, codenamed Phoenix, at Connect next week. They could display a virtual workspace or movie screen in AR and are set to release in 2027, following a similar concept device from 2024. The camera-free design may still raise privacy concerns because of its microphones and ordinary-looking frames.
