Mark Wahlberg Is Open to AI Enhancing Films and Extending His Likeness

Actor and director Mark Wahlberg said he supports using artificial intelligence in filmmaking when it enhances creative work, while emphasizing that storytelling should remain central.

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Wahlberg said AI could be used for elements of the upcoming Pete Rose biopic, in which he is set to play the title role. He cited enhancing the stadium setting as a possible use. He said he opposes relying on ChatGPT to generate a script in place of real actors, but supports AI when it improves work already being done.

Wahlberg contrasted effects-driven films with storytelling, recalling the first Jurassic Park and Perfect Storm as examples of earlier cutting-edge computer-generated imagery. He said he is less passionate about effects-driven movies than about real storytelling.

Asked by TechCrunch Editor-in-Chief Connie Loizos about CAA Vault, a Creative Artists Agency facility that scans actors’ bodies, faces, movements and voices to create AI replicas, Wahlberg said he had not visited but would be interested. He said he would welcome his children or grandchildren managing his likeness in the future and potentially placing him in films.

He also said he would not oppose an AI version of his likeness continuing his upcoming animated series, “Ted,” if audiences wanted to watch it. His remarks described openness to these possibilities, not a confirmed plan to use an AI replica.
