Lightroom mobile can open closed eyes with one tap

Adobe has added an Open Eyes feature to the mobile version of Lightroom. The generative AI tool is available on iOS, iPadOS, and Android, and can open a person’s closed eyes in a photo with a single tap.

When Lightroom detects that a person or group has closed eyes in an image, it automatically displays an Open Eyes Quick Action icon over the photo. Tapping it applies the change. Adobe says the feature uses other images of the same person in the user’s Lightroom library as references, helping the replacement eyes match that person’s color, size, and shape, as well as the photo’s lighting and pose.

Adobe’s Photoshop Elements has offered a way to open a subject’s eyes for nearly a decade. As DPReview points out, Elements takes replacement eyes from another photo of the subject, so results can vary when the images differ. Lightroom mobile’s new feature instead relies on generative AI.

Similar edits are possible in other Adobe apps, including Photoshop, with their generative AI tools, but they are not a one-tap fix and are not free. According to DPReview, people using the free Lightroom mobile app can try Open Eyes twice before being prompted to subscribe to an Adobe Creative Cloud plan that includes more credits for its AI-powered tools.
