Amazon’s Bee AI devices are designed to record conversations, help users remember details and turn plans into actions. Those actions could include shopping through Amazon, linking everyday remarks to product recommendations.
The company offers two devices: Bee Frontier, which clips to a wrist strap or clothing, and Bee Eclipse, a magnetic smartphone attachment. They cost $75 and $100, respectively, depending on the model. Amazon says Bee processes audio in real time and deletes it rather than retaining recordings. Transcripts are encrypted and can be deleted by users. The devices have physical controls and lights to show when they are listening, and the Amazon shopping connection is optional and opt-in.
Those protections do not resolve every concern raised by the product’s ability to interpret conversations. Information extracted from speech can be revealing even when the original audio is deleted. Other people in a conversation may not know about the device or agree to have their words analyzed.
TechRadar’s Eric Hal Schwartz notes that Amazon has not said Bee will automatically turn every overheard complaint into a recommendation. Still, personalized shopping is part of the product’s stated ambitions. Bee could help people keep track of appointments and promises, but adding spoken conversations to the customer information Amazon already has may create a more intimate picture of users’ lives.
