The Document Foundation, the nonprofit behind the open-source document editor LibreOffice, says it will not add artificial intelligence to the software’s default installation for the foreseeable future.
In a blog post, the organization said its latest version, released in late August, contains no generative AI features. It described that as a deliberate design choice intended to keep users’ documents on their devices and ensure the software does not require a network connection to work.
The foundation said there is currently no AI integration that meets all its requirements, including keeping user data on-device and avoiding dependence on a single AI provider. It said the criteria do not amount to a definitive rejection of AI, but reflect an assessment of the technology today.
Users who want AI features can install extensions that connect LibreOffice to local AI models. The foundation said there will be no AI of any kind in the default installation until an integration meets its requirements, and that it will continue to monitor the technology.
