JBL Bar 800MK2 review: expansive Atmos sound and detachable surrounds

TechRadar reviewer Harry Padoan tested the JBL Bar 800MK2 soundbar with 4K UHD Blu-rays, Dolby Atmos and stereo music. He describes it as a mid-range model in JBL’s MK2 line, combining a main bar, detachable rear speakers and a subwoofer.

The system has a 7.1-channel configuration, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, and a maximum power output of 780W. The main bar uses six full-range drivers and two tweeters; each surround speaker has two full-range drivers, while the subwoofer has a 10-inch bass unit.

Padoan praises the sound’s expansive presentation, powerful bass and clear dialogue. He says the detachable rear speakers contribute to immersive surround sound, and highlights PureVoice as a way to bring vocals forward. The JBL One app offers speaker-volume controls, Night Mode, EQ options and sound calibration, among other features. The system also supports voice assistants, AirPlay and Google Cast.

The Bar 800MK2 lacks dedicated up-firing drivers, so its Atmos height effects are virtual. Padoan found them convincing, though he notes the limitation. Connections include HDMI eARC, one HDMI input, digital optical, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet. The HDMI input supports 4K passthrough at up to 60Hz. The review also notes that the subwoofer is bulky. Padoan says the model is regularly discounted, but the source provides no price.
