Granola, known for its meeting notetaker, has launched a dictation feature for Mac. It comes months after Wispr, known for its dictation tool, added a meeting notetaker.
Users press the “Fn” key and speak; Granola cleans up and formats their speech, then inserts the text into the app they are using. The feature works across apps, including for writing notes, prompts, emails and messages. Granola says dictation is free with unlimited words. The company said the feature will come to iOS and Windows soon.
Granola and Wispr are valued at $1.5 billion and $2 billion, respectively. Granola focuses on meeting automation and note-taking. Wispr is trying to build its own models through a research lab exploring different human-computer interfaces.
The two companies are not alone in combining voice features. Fireflies, Speechify and Monologue have also developed apps with meeting note-taking and dictation capabilities. The article describes a shift from voice apps focused on doing one thing well toward apps seeking to do more with users’ speech.
