Google will migrate Gemini Gems to skills on November 17, 2026

Google is ending Gemini’s Gems feature and will automatically migrate existing Gems to a new format called skills starting on November 17, 2026. Users do not need to take action, and their Gems will remain usable until the change.

Launched in 2024, Gems let users create custom AI assistants for specific tasks without repeating instructions. Google’s pre-made examples included a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career guide, coding partner and editor. Users could also create and share custom Gems for needs such as running, nutrition or vacation planning.

Google says the skills can be used across different AI tasks. To select one, users will need to enter a forward slash, “/”, in a task thread. TechCrunch reports that Google is sharing details of the change in the Gemini app. The shutdown was first reported over the weekend by 9to5Google.
