Google Fixes Setup Issues for Older Chromecast and Google Home Devices

Google has rolled out a fix for setup and functionality problems affecting some older Chromecast and Google Home devices.

The problems began after Google announced in May that it would end support for its oldest Chromecast dongles. Owners then reported that some devices had disappeared from the Google Home app on Android, while an app update made Chromecast setup more difficult.

The first-generation Chromecast, released more than 10 years ago, was among the affected devices. Similar issues later appeared on the 2015 Chromecast model and the Google Home Mini speaker. In some cases, users reported problems with both device functionality and setup.

Users had been trying workarounds including factory resets, reverting to older versions of the Google Home app, and resetting their entire Home ecosystem. Google said the issue has been resolved, indicating that the crashes were caused by a software glitch.

The Google Nest Community account on Reddit said users should factory reset an affected speaker or update the Google Home app to version 4.26 before trying again. Google removed the first Chromecast from shelves in early 2025, but the latest fix suggests that the company has not yet abandoned the device.
