Google is expanding automatic workout detection on the Fitbit Air and several other wearables, with an update expected later this month. The company has not given an exact release date.
The update is coming to the Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Watch 5 and the recently announced Fitbit Edge. Google says a new large language model foundation will improve activity detection reliability. The system will also use Google Health context readings, drawing on exercise routines, history and location—with user permission—to detect activity with 2x more accuracy and cut missed workouts by more than half.
Eligible activity that meets a user’s minimum duration threshold and includes a sustained elevated heart rate will be detected automatically. A workout summary will reach the mobile app within 30 minutes. The wearable will be able to detect more than 100 additional workout types, compared with 10 previously; examples include strength training and swimming.
The update also brings access to Google’s Health Guardian features, which monitor health changes over time. Health Guardian and Health Coach require a Google Health Premium subscription, listed at $9.99, £7.99 or AU$14.99 per month. Google says Health Guardian can show trends such as blood pressure and insulin resistance, and provide a monthly report for users who meet the wear requirements. The company says the features are not designed to diagnose or treat health issues and advises people with concerns to seek professional medical advice.
