Google is advising Android users in parts of Canada to install pending updates after recent time-zone changes caused some devices to display the wrong time.
British Columbia and Manitoba have permanently switched to daylight saving time this year. Clocks there will not be turned back an hour on November 1. In an announcement on the Android Community Help forums, Google said users whose devices show the wrong time because of the new time-zone rules should install any pending updates from their phone manufacturer and Google, then restart their devices.
If the time or time zone is still incorrect, Google recommends searching for “Date and Time” in Android settings and turning on both “Automatic time zone” and “Use location for time zone.” As a fallback, users can turn off automatic time-zone detection and manually select a time zone with the correct offset for their region.
Time rules vary between Canadian provinces and sometimes within smaller regions, which can make it harder for devices to reflect changes promptly. The report also notes that the US is considering permanent daylight saving time, following the House’s advancement of the Sunshine Protection Act in July. If the whole country adopted the change at once, the report says, keeping devices updated with the rules could be less complicated.
