Fujifilm has announced the XF 400mm F4.5 R OIS LM WR, a super-telephoto prime lens for its X series APS-C cameras, including the X-T5 and X-H2S. Its 609mm-equivalent focal length and maximum f/4.5 aperture are suited to photographing birds and other wildlife.
The lens is not the longest in Fujifilm’s XF range: that distinction belongs to the 500mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR, which offers a 762mm-equivalent focal length. However, the new 400mm lens is compatible with Fujifilm’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, although using them reduces the maximum aperture.
The XF 400mm F4.5 R OIS LM WR weighs 1,245g and measures 240mm in length. It includes optical image stabilization rated at 5.5EV, a weather-resistant design, a tripod collar, a strap loop, and a lens hood. Its focus limiter offers Full or 7m to infinity settings.
During a hands-on session, the lens delivered sharp results at its maximum aperture, while its autofocus was essentially silent and fast. Subject tracking on the X-H2S produced a high hit rate when the bird stayed in the frame. The reviewer found high-end full-frame Sony equipment snappier, leaving Fujifilm behind in autofocus performance.
The lens will be available from the end of September for $3,200 / £2,499. The Australia price is still to be confirmed.
